Installation of an "evaluation copy" of
"MyAddress & Contact Data!"
[ There is NOT much difference between the installation of an "evaluation copy" and the "real" application - all existing data can be re-used (only the file "address.exe" will be replaced via a simple copy command. ]

Before you implement your "live" version - we strongly recommend to install an "evaluation copy" first and try out all the features of the application.
We also suggest to install some "freeware" programs from other authors to get a feeling for the practical use of our application and how to work with your data in ways you have never thought are possible. These freeware applications work independly from our application, we are not the developers nor are we affiliated with them. These applications are also not integrated with our applications, any similar one can fulfill the same purpose. They are only called from within our application and remain in all details in their original design. You should also visit the web sites of the authors to get the latest versions.
The installation procedure ...
Because of the practical implications for our target group we have chosen a new way to install our application(s). We have found it much more suitable in this case than all the other setup and installation routines we know about.
The approach we have taken is forward thinking because it considers the aspects of data security and better data management by providing transparency during the installation process (but also that a person with common sense can follow things up).
There are absolutely NO changes done to system
files, registry etc. - everything is transparent to you !
Let's go to work - all the steps
are simple to perform, you are always aware what is done (to your PC) and
you can follow things up:
First you will need to download the following files from our web site to perform an installation of "MyAddress & Contact Data!" :
Step 1:
Download a batch
file to set up the basic folder structure on your PC (file name: folder_path.zip)

and run the batch file: folder.bat to create the necessary folder
structure
on drive C:\ - keep the file:
path.txt for the moment in a safe place
Step 2:
Download a set of
so-called .dll files (dynamic link libraries) - to be copied into c:\tbsc
...
[ Click the link above, unzip: tbsc_dll.zip
and copy them ALL into c:\tbsc ]
Step 3:
The MyAddress &
Contact Data ! Evaluation Copy ( tbsc.dll
and folder.path are usually included )
[ download file: myaddress.zip ,
unzip it and copy all files into c:\tbsc ]
These three steps allow you to setup
and run the basic evaluation copy !

Please be aware: on slower connections it might take some minutes time to download the page !
Available is also: addrview.zip - the viewer application to "MyAddress & Contact Data!" which is FREELY distributable (similar to: "MyNet - on a Floppy!"). It means you can share your valuable address data with others who don't own a license of "MyAddress & Contact Data!" - this can be a very cost effective solution in a small (business) environment.
The only difference to "MyAddress & Contact Data" is that you CANNOT ADD records to the "address book" file - but otherwise it works the same way, also: all the features are available. Practically everything what you can do with "MyAddress & Contact Data !" can be done with the viewer application: changing and deleting records, creating queries and reports etc.
Example :
If the address data is maintained by one person / in one place only and if there is no need that others update / modify the records then you can provide them with the "viewer" application. If they are not at the same physical location then just e-mail them the files to overwrite their existing ones and work with the fresh data.
This approach is however only advisable if there is no need for a feedback and/or no need to update the original records - just processing and working with existing data until the new data sets arrive ! A good example is that over the week new address data is collected with "MyAddress and Contact Data !" - at the end of the week the business owner creates some reports for himself from the collected material. We can think of hundreds of similar situations in practice: a smaller charitable organization, a hotel, a SOHO (small office / home office) ....
If permanent feedback and update by others is
required then you should get a network licence for the number of users
connected.
Caution:
The files: browsers.tps
(a list with the web browsers you use)
viewers.tps (a list with external file
viewer applications)
are commonly used in several of our applications. This means: if you install for example "MyAddress & Contact Data" after you have installed "MyNet - Anywhere" ( or vice versa ) it could be that these files are overwritten with our demo data. If you have performed regular backups you can copy both files from the backup folder: c:\bu_tbsc\data\mynet into: c:\tbsc again.
Next steps:
Add the EVALUATION COPY of our MAILING LIST Application:

and copy the extracted files all into: c:\tbsc

The Program can be called from the EDIT Menu - but runs also "stand-alone" as mailplus.exe
[ If you run it "stand-alone" then it has - like "MyAddress & Contact Data !" - the same internal Report Writer integrated - this is very useful if you have requirements which go beyond the pre-defined reports and labels provided.
If you run it stand-alone please DON'T FORGET to download and install the files from Step 1 and 2 as listed above. ]
For those who are just curious there is a FREEWARE
version of the Mailing List available from our FREEWARE site or
click here to download it: maillist.zip
. You can also run it "stand-alone" or use it within "MyAddress & Contact
Data !".
Just copy the file "maillist.exe" into c:\tbsc and rename it to "mailplus.exe".
There are of course differences to MAILPLUS, that offers more convenient features like the Report Writer - but otherwise the FREEWARE version might just fit all your needs. You also need to perform Step 1 and 2 as listed before.
If you start out with the FREE MAILING
LIST application and want then continue with MAILPLUS and "MyAddress &
Contact Data !" - NO problem. You can use the TOPSCAN utility and save
your file: people.tps as addrbook.tps.
Some other tasks:
Download the file emptyfiles.zip
and keep it for later. When you are finished with the evaluation copy and
want to enter your own data: just unzip this file and overwrite the existing
demo data. In some cases of general interest we have left some entries:
countries.tps is such an example.

to change the path statement in your autoexec.bat

Download them too and study the help pages. Especially the TOPSCAN Utility is very useful. To give you an example:
The MAILING LIST application is often used only three or four times a year (and each mailing might have different individual options which are not known until shortly before the mailout takes place). We use then the TOPSCAN utility (under: File / Database Scanner) open the file: addrbook.tps and save it as: people.tps. With people.tps we have then the up-to-date foundation available to build the mailout.

Under "external" Reportwriter you can allocate a report writer of your choice - we are using CRYSTAL REPORTS (version 4.5 or so which was some years ago distributed as a FREEWARE promotion tool on a cover CD ROM by PC Pro Magazine.

When everything is set up and tried you should have a major "building block". It is practical, easy to use and offers some real benefits - and not only for the (small) business or for an individual user.
A good understanding of your File Management Tool (like MS-Explorer) is very helpful.

To un-install the entire application - simply DELETE the folder c:\tbsc- your data files are also backed up in folder:c:\bu_tbsc. We stronly recommend a folder protection utility with password access, in case the kids are starting mucking around with your PC - this risiko is always present in smaller businesses (but also in the big company).
www.pcguardian.com offers a FREEWARE version protecting just a folder like c:\tbsc

Copy Protection against unlicensed use of our applications
Any application you purchase from us will be personalized and then send to you by e-mail, by mail, by courier or otherwise as agreed.
Our applications are protected by certain measures against unlicensed (non-agreed) and/or multiple copying.
First of all there is on the right side of the toolbar (below the menu) a button with the " i " symbol on it. If you click on it then a similar window (see the evaluation copy) opens. It displays information about the registered user of our software in an unobtrusive way (the information is not always visible and disappears when clicking on the window). However the information displayed is "hard-wired" and cannot be removed without destroying the entire program.
There are also some features build-in to prevent non-agreed multiple copying of our applications (depending on the number of licenses you have purchased).
It makes absolutely NO sense to give copies of a licensed application away to others, because the application will stop working after a certain number of days and/or when a certain number of records has been reached. This renders the software useless for any third party which does not own a license.
An unlicensed or pirated copy can also be recognized when you look at the TITLE bar of the main window. If there is another company / person listed using the software on this machine - then the software is probably NOT licensed to this company / person.
If you see our application is running on a machine - but the licensed owner shown is different from the person / company using the application then we would appreciate if you drop us a line (also anonymous - we assure 100 % confidentiality).
We will certainly ask the licensed owner for an explanation how his/her registered copy could have fallen into the wrong hands. Because only our customer could have received the individualized application (and has paid for the license) he/she is certainly interested in the protection of the investment and that the application is not used by third parties.
This way we have achieved a simple but useful copy protection - also: no one wants that his personal details to fall into the wrong hands and will therefore protect the software against misuse.
It is standard procedure that the name and contact details of the legal licensee will appear in the TITLE bar and/or in the information screen - however in cases where several people have access to - or are using - the same machine it might not be appropriate that order details appear in the program. This will be handled on a case to case basis.
[ Without this type of "copy protection" we would not be in a position to offer our customers such reasonable prices. Thank you for your understanding. ]
On the other hand: our target group are small / medium sized businesses and individual computer users. If they have more than one machine or running a small network we are quite happy to make them a VERY fair price for using our applications on several machines. Just let us know the number of machines you want to use it on.
The press is full with reports about new ways to license, to register, and to "activate" software nowadays (speak: squeezing more money out of the customer). We know many of our customers and have built up over time a good relationship with them (even if it is only by e-mail or over the phone).
To be honest: we actually have
no time to invent new gimmicks to make our customers life difficult. We
trust you from the moment we receive your order and that you will provide
us with the right number of machines in use !
The rules are simple:
If you have 1 desktop PC at the office plus a
notebook for the road and/or a machine at home:
1 license
If you have 1 notebook at the office plus a machine
at home:
1 license
If you have 2 or more desktop PCs or notebooks
at the office + one notebook for the road and/or a machine at home:
2 or more licenses
If you have a network with a server and ten machines then it comes to 11 licenses (one for the server and ten for the connected machines) - NO additional license is required for one notebook for use on the road and/or one machine at home.
